Abilities Week

During the week of April 7th to the 11th, South Hunterdon Middle school on Location students celebrated Abilities week. During Abilities Week, our school came together to celebrate the many ways people live, learn, and communicate. Throughout the week, students experienced powerful and inspiring presentations that highlighted different abilities and perspectives. Mrs. Ford led an engaging lesson on alternate forms of communication, teaching students how a communication board works and giving them hands-on practice with an iPad communication device. Students also learned about sign language and were able to decode messages. Ms. Wesner introduced students to a Special Olympic Athlete, who shared inspiring stories and answered thoughtful questions from our curious learners.

To close out the week, 5th and 6th graders joined the elementary students for a special presentation by Dr. Paul, who shared his personal experiences living with Cerebral Palsy—his message of resilience and determination left a lasting impact on us all.

As part of Abilities Week, our Eagle Ambassadors led a heartwarming project that celebrated individuality and unity. Each student designed a puzzle piece to reflect their unique characteristics, talents, and interests. With the help of our dedicated Ambassadors, all the pieces were brought together to create one large, connected puzzle—symbolizing how our differences make us stronger as a community. This powerful visual reminder now stands proudly in our school, showing that when we come together, we truly complete the picture.

We ended this memorable week with an exciting Abilities Dance Party, featuring another amazing Special Olympic Athlete—DJ Red Line! His energy and beats brought smiles to students and staff alike as we danced our way into spring break. Throughout the week, students also showed their spirit with themed dress-up days as part of our Abilities Week Spirit Week. It was truly a week full of learning, celebration, and joy!

Recently, our 5th graders had a special visit from a nurse—who also happens to be the mother of two of our students! LeQuan and LeAsia introduced their mother's career with their class. She shared what a typical day looks like in her role as a nurse, explaining how she helps patients and works with doctors to keep people healthy. The students were especially engaged during a fun and eye-opening activity about germs. Using just water, pepper, and a bit of soap, she showed how germs can spread—and how easily they can be stopped with good handwashing. It was a memorable and educational experience for everyone!
