South Hunterdon Regional Middle School celebrated MLK across various subjects and grade levels. Students collaborated and shared creative ideas within the classrooms. 7th and 8th graders connected their readings to a wide variety of topics.

Seventh grade students discussed how the Martin Luther King Jr. quote, “Injustice anywhere is a thread to justice everwhere,” connects to something Ned experiences in Code Talker.

An idea from All Quiet on the Western Front is that soldiers become “machines” or “beasts” trained to survive, not to think.
Martin Luther King Jr. warned that violence turns people into objects rather than human beings. Eighth graders discussed how both All Quiet on the Western Front and Martin Luther King Jr.  show that violent system (war, racism, militarism) can erase individuality or dehumanize people.

Overall students enjoyed the opportunity to think and discuss creativity with their peers. Thank Mrs. Williamson for all of your support!

Students in 5th and 6th grade had the opportunity to discuss Martin Luther King Jr in Mrs. McCarthy’s class. She supports students in respectfully sharing their perspectives on various topics related to MLK. Students discussed segregation and how it connects to other books read in class. Students enjoyed diving in to various ideas and find hidden connections to the various novels they have been reading. Thank you Mrs. McCarthy for encouraging a creative welcoming space to encourage students to share ideas! Students enjoyed reading more articles and books on Martin Luther Kind Jr as well and expand their knowledge!

Mr. Engle and Holohan worked with 5th-8th grade students as well in the History world. Students had the opportunity to discuss MLK in relation to history class and discuss related themes during this time period. In addition, students were able to get creative in art class and creative live demonstrations of this special leader. Students enjoyed the opportunity to use different materials to bring their vision to life. Thank you Mrs. Carril for encouraging students to think outside of the box!

Our 5th-8th grade students had the opportunity to learn the importance of being safe online and the impact of cyberbullying! The internet can be a wonderful tool, but it can present certain risks to the user. This program teaches responsible online behavior and safety strategies.

Some of the topics covered were as follows: safety concerns using social media and games, understanding the impact and consequences of your social media behavior, Cyber bullying, and Internet predators. Students will learn about the “digital footprint” their behavior is leaving behind.

What's Coming Up?

Attention 8th Graders! It's Almost Scheduling Season ...

Mrs. Fenimore will  be visiting all the science classes to introduce 8th grades to HS scheduling options. She will be meeting with students to discuss academic options and classes they will be taking in high school. This is an exciting time for 8th graders because it is a sneak peek for high school.

She will be reviewing graduation requirements and explaining the different course and program options available. During these visits, students will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn about elective choices, and receive guidance to help them make informed decisions as they transition to high school. Stay tuned for more information.

Random Acts of Kindness Week: February 16th - 20th

This year middle school students will continue to collect cereal boxes for our Great Kindness Challenge. Middle school students will be collaborating with high school students for this great event. We will be collecting unopened cereal boxes to support our local food pantry. Staff and students will work side by side to gather as many boxes as possible. Every donation makes a difference. Join us in watching kindness spread, one box at a time!

As part of the Kindness Challenge, cereal boxes will be lined up in a domino pattern, setting them up so that they topple one after the other. The goal is to visually demonstrate how one small action can have a big impact, just like kindness. When one box falls, it triggers the next — a powerful reminder that one act of kindness can inspire many more.

We hope this fun and interactive experience will reinforce the importance of kindness in our daily lives.Thank you for your continued support in fostering a positive and compassionate school environment. Eagles, we can do this!
Let's see how many boxes we can collect. Middle School students are looking forward to collaborating with high school Peer Leaders… and a special visit from out mascot Swoop!
