Virtual Visit with Author & Illustrator

Fifth grade students recently enjoyed an exciting virtual visit with author and illustrator Dav Pilkey right from the Middle School library. During the live Zoom event, students participated in a fun “Draw with Dav” session, following along as Pilkey demonstrated how to sketch characters from his wildly popular Dog Man series. Students loved watching the drawing come to life and hearing directly from the creator behind some of their favorite books.

As a special surprise, Pilkey generously gifted the library a signed copy of the Dog Man poster he created during the session. The autographed artwork is now proudly displayed, giving students a lasting reminder of this memorable experience and their connection with one of today’s most beloved children’s authors.

National Speech-Language-Hearing Month

National Speech-Language-Hearing Month is being celebrated throughout the month of May at SHRMS!

Each day in May, students are sharing a morning announcement with an interesting fact related to articulation, language, voice, fluency, or hearing.  Students and staff are being reminded of the importance of learning and using good communication skills.

Fun giveaways and handouts are being shared to raise awareness about the important ways that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can support students and colleagues in the classroom setting.

Puzzle pieces illustrate the diverse roles of SLPs, including working on articulation, vocabulary, and social skills.
A sign reads 'JUST A LITTLE ENCOURAGE-MINT TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR VOICE!' above a bowl of mints.
A variety of chip bags, including Lay's, Doritos, Ruffles, and Fritos, are displayed with a sign celebrating Speech-Language-Hearing Month.

Communication disorders are among the most common disabilities that school-aged children experience.  Left untreated,  a person’s academic, social, and career success—as well as their overall quality of life, can be negatively impacted. Treatment by an SLP at any age or any stage can make a beneficial change.

National Speech-Language-Hearing Month is a great time to help all people, no matter how they communicate, to feel included in the school community. It’s an important time to reflect on how to be respectful and supportive to those with speech/language/hearing challenges.
Happy National Speech-Language-Hearing Month!
